i>clicker may be used as a simple tool to provide instant, anonymous feedback, or as a tool to promote active learning in the classroom and give students credit for class participation and/or performance.
As of Fall 2011, i>clicker is the centrally supported audience response system on the UMass Amherst campus. Support for the previous clicker system (PRS) has been discontinued.
At this time, the best solution for classroom audience response is the i>clicker base station and the i>clicker 2 handheld student remote. Instructors should not use REEF from i>Clicker (formerly GO), or any other WiFi-based mobile audience response solution (e.g., Top Hat), for on-campus courses.
Currently, there are very few classrooms that have the wireless network capacity to support the performance that instructors and students require for high-stakes active learning with an audience response system. UMass Amherst is asking instructors to not require students to incur the additional cost of purchasing ANY mobile audience response application (REEF, TopHat, etc.) until the campus wireless network can support mobile audience response in the majority of classrooms.

We provide all instructors who choose to utilize i>clicker with a receiver (see image at right), software, and an instructor remote at no cost.
IT will also be installing receivers in the classrooms where clickers are often used. Please let us know what classroom you will be teaching in each semester.

In Fall 2011 the UMass Amherst campus switched to i>clicker. Instructors will be pre-ordering i>clicker remotes through Amazon CourseMaterials Request Tool in SPIRE. Check the “Class Overview/Textbook” page for you course(s) in SPIRE to see if your instructor(s) will be requiring i>clicker.
Be sure to purchase the correct clicker. The UMass Amherst campus is only supporting the i>clicker model 2 (ISBN: 1498601634), which has an LCD panel (see image on the right).
